In 1978 we held our first conference of Women in Oaxaca drawing feminists from both the local and national contexts.
\nBetween 1979 and 1984 we broadcast \u201cForo de la Mujer\u201d (\u2018Women\u2019s forum\u2019) on Radio Universidad.
\nBetween 1985 and 1998 in the Juan Rulfo theatre we gave weekly presentations that publicised the legal position of women in\u00a0Oaxaca and the pressing need for reform.
\nIn 1987, to mark the tenth anniversary of the group, we held our second conference of Women in Oaxaca.
\nIn 1990 we received our first round of funding from the MacArthur Foundation, allowing us to offer our services from the\u00a0Casa de la Mujer \u201cRosario Castellanos\u201d.<\/p>\n
In 1992 we managed the creation of a Specialized Agency for Sex Crimes. In the same year, we signed an agreement with the National System for Integral Family
\nDevelopment (\u2018Sistema Nacional para el Desarrollo Integral de la Familia\u2019 or DIF) and the State Attorney\u2019s office with a view to providing training through the
\nCollective Against Violence against Women (\u2018Colectivo Contra la Violencia hacia la Mujer A.C.\u2019 or COVAC).<\/p>\n
From 1992 to 1996, with the support of the MacArthur Foundation, we conducted research on the reality of Sexual and Reproductive Health for Women in the five
\nregions of Oaxaca, which resulted in a series of three videos (\u201cOur Shared Lives\u201d) which, as well as being subtitled in English, were dubbed in the regional
\ndialects of Zapoteco, Mixe and Mixteco. These were distributed both nationally and internationally. We also produce a series of 20 audio programs (\u201cLuces de
\nmujer\u201d).<\/p>\n
From 1994 to 1995, with funding from the\u00a0Ford Foundation, we conducted the\u00a0Seminar on Sexual and Reproductive\u00a0Health. This brought together officials\u00a0from various government institutions and\u00a0civil associations, and urged for the\u00a0inclusion of gender equality perspective in\u00a0their programs and activities.<\/p>\n
In 1995, we created the Guadalupe\u00a0Musalem Scholarship Fund with the\u00a0objective of supporting young Oaxacan\u00a0women from indigenous communities and\u00a0enabling them to continue their\u00a0baccalaureate studies.
\nIn 1997, to mark our group\u2019s twentieth\u00a0anniversary, we held a meeting with\u00a0recognized national experts covering\u00a0sexual and reproductive health, violence\u00a0against women and the environment.<\/p>\n
In 1997 we received an award from the\u00a0National Indigenous Institute (\u2018Instituto\u00a0Nacional Indigenista\u2019) in recognition of\u00a0our work training doctors, surgeons and\u00a0dentists, in gender equality and sexual and\u00a0reproductive rights.<\/p>\n
In 1999, we collaborated with the Centre\u00a0for women\u2019s and family studies (\u2018Centro\u00a0de estudios para la Mujer y la Familia\u2019 or\u00a0CEMyF) and the Gender Equality\u00a0Commission (\u2018Comisi\u00f3n de Equidad de\u00a0G\u00e9nero de la LVII legislatura del estado\u2019)\u00a0to hold awareness-raising workshops for\u00a0Members of the Chamber of Deputies.<\/p>\n
In 2001 we organized the meeting\u00a0“Indigenous women: A space for reflection\u00a0and participation” which was attended by\u00a0120 participants from five states of the\u00a0country and the Federal District of Mexico\u00a0City.<\/p>\n
In 2002 we made the video “Step by step:\u00a0towards a maternity without risks”, which
\nwas dubbed to Mixe, Mixteco, Zapoteco,\u00a0Chatino and subtitled in English.<\/p>\n
In 2003 we signed an agreement with the\u00a0Health Services of Oaxaca (\u2018Servicios de\u00a0Salud de Oaxaca\u2019 or SSO) to train\u00a0personnel in 21 municipalities with poor\u00a0records for maternal deaths. We\u00a0promoted and managed the signing of\u00a0public commitments by the then\u00a0candidates for governor of the state. The\u00a0commitments were in favour of the Oaxaca\u00a0Agenda for Women for Gender Equality,\u00a0and aimed to incorporate the problem of\u00a0maternal death in the axis of sexual and\u00a0reproductive health, this garnered the\u00a0support of 64 organizations; organisations\u00a0that came to form the \u2018Huaxyacac\u00a0Collective\u2019.<\/p>\n
In 2004 we trained midwives, their\u00a0apprentices, health personnel of the\u00a0Mexican Social Security Institute\u00a0(\u2018Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social\u2019 or\u00a0IMSS) and health workers in Tlahuitoltepec, Mixe, Oaxaca, to raise\u00a0awareness of the importance of\u00a0preventing violence during maternity and\u00a0caring for victims thereof. To this end, we\u00a0drafted “To talk is to understand”, a brief\u00a0guide to the care of female victims of\u00a0family-based violence.<\/p>\n
In 2004 we made the short film “Cual Hoja\u00a0al viento” on the health situation of female\u00a0agricultural labourers, which received an\u00a0honourable mention in the National\u00a0Institute for Women\u2019s video contest in the\u00a0category of health and migration. The film\u00a0went on to be recognised again by the\u00a0National Institute for Women in 2006.
\nThat same year we received another award from the National Institute for\u00a0Women for the project “Step-by-Step\u00a0Maternity Care: Sexual and reproductive\u00a0health for migrant day labourers in\u00a0Oaxaca”, in recognition of it being the most\u00a0successful program in sexual and\u00a0reproductive health for rural and\u00a0indigenous communities.<\/p>\n
In 2009, Maricela Zurita Cruz, a young\u00a0indigenous woman from the community of\u00a0San Juan Quiahije, Juquila, a graduate of\u00a0our Scholarship program, was awarded\u00a0the 2008 National Youth Award, in the\u00a0category of Social Commitment.<\/p>\n
This achievement was repeated in 2010\u00a0when two graduates of our Scholarship\u00a0program were awarded the Bicentennial\u00a0Edition of the National Youth Prize 2009:\u00a0Berta Mart\u00ednez Sebasti\u00e1n, native of the\u00a0community of Santa Mar\u00eda Alotepec , Mixe,\u00a0Oaxaca, in the category of Social
\nCommitment; Sonia Garc\u00eda \u00c1ngel,\u00a0originally from San Felipe de Jes\u00fas Pueblo\u00a0Viejo, Santa Mar\u00eda Yucuhiti, Tlaxiaco,\u00a0Oaxaca, in the category of Cultural\u00a0Development.<\/p>\n
In 2012, in light of its success and\u00a0achievements, we legally constituted the\u00a0Guadalupe Musalem Fund as a civil\u00a0association. From then on, we collaborated\u00a0together as sister organisations for the\u00a0benefit of the young women of the state of Oaxaca.<\/p>\n
In 2012 we received an award from the\u00a0Honourable City of Oaxaca de Ju\u00e1rez for\u00a0over 35 years of invaluable work in the\u00a0field of social justice and our contribution\u00a0to the welfare of Oaxacan women.<\/p>\n
In the same year, the Government of the\u00a0State of Oaxaca formally acknowledged\u00a0our work in favour of women\u2019s rights and\u00a0in the development of an egalitarian,\u00a0equitable and just society.<\/p>\n
